she was a remarkable woman who changed my life and the lives of many other people,”said Councilor Peter Li Preti as he officially opened the Gizella Katona Library in the 35 Shoreham senior’s building . With the help of residents, community members and the Toronto Housing Corporation, the bright, newly painted room has over 1000 books for the residents to use.
The books are in many languages and cover many topics. It is a special resource that covers a wide variety of subjects. Ms. Katona was a resident of the building who, at the age of 85 went back to University and earned her doctorate. She taught many seniors computer skills and wrote a number of books in Hungarian and English.
Gizella Katona died on Canada Day, two years ago. Ms Katona dedicated her life to teaching both in her native Hungary as well as in her adoptive country Canada. She dedicated a great deal of time teaching at York University and conducted research in the community. She will be greatly missed.
